Frequently asked questions
How do I pair my phone and my Mac?
- Install Ember on your Android phone from Google Play, and on your Mac from the Mac App Store.
- On your Mac, click the Ember icon in the menu bar and choose Pair New Device…. A QR code appears.
- On your phone, open Ember, tap Pair with Mac and scan the code.
The two devices exchange encryption keys directly, and nothing is uploaded. After that they find each other automatically over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. If pairing doesn't finish, make sure Bluetooth is on for both devices and that you allowed the permissions Ember asked for.
My Mac doesn't connect (Bluetooth and Local Network permissions)
Ember on the Mac needs Bluetooth to reach your phone, and Local Network access to connect over Wi-Fi. If you declined either prompt:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth and turn on Ember.
- On macOS 15 or later, also open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and turn on Ember. In Ember's Settings… → Transports, Open Local Network Settings… takes you straight there.
For Wi-Fi sync, both devices need to be on the same network.
Ember disconnects when my phone is idle (battery optimization)
Some phones stop apps in the background to save battery, which cuts the connection to your Mac. When Ember asks, let it run without battery restrictions. If you skipped that, open Settings → Apps → Ember → Battery on your phone and choose Unrestricted. The names vary by phone maker. dontkillmyapp.com has steps for specific brands.
While Ember is connected, it shows a small ongoing notification. Android requires it for apps that stay connected in the background, so please leave it on.
How do I see my phone's notifications on my Mac?
- In Ember on your phone, turn on Notification mirroring and allow notification access when Android asks. To find it later, search your phone's Settings for “Notification access”.
- Pick the apps you want under Choose apps to mirror.
- On your Mac, allow notifications for Ember in System Settings → Notifications, and check that Show phone notifications is on in Ember's settings.
Mirrored notifications are end-to-end encrypted and go only to your paired Mac.
What is Auto-copy, and why does it need Accessibility?
Auto-copy sends what you copy on your phone to your Mac without you having to open Ember. It's optional and off by default.
When you turn it on, Ember's accessibility service watches taps, pop-up and toolbar windows, and “copied” toast messages in other apps to notice when you copy something. It reads the text of the item you tapped and of those windows only to detect a Copy action. When it detects one, Ember briefly opens an invisible screen to read the clipboard, because Android only lets the app in focus read it. It then sends the copied content to your paired Mac, end-to-end encrypted. Nothing is sent to us.
To use it, turn on Auto-copy to Mac in Ember's settings and agree to the in-app disclosure. Then turn on Ember in your phone's Settings → Accessibility (often under “Installed apps” or “Downloaded apps”). You can turn it off at any time. The privacy policy has the details.
Prefer not to? You can still send your clipboard with the Send to Mac Quick Settings tile, from the share sheet, or with Send clipboard in the app.
How does cloud sync work?
When your phone and Mac can't reach each other over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, Ember can connect them through our relay over the internet. Turn on Sync over internet on your phone and Sync over the Internet (Relay) on your Mac, then sign in on both with your email address. We email you a 6-digit code, and there's no password.
The relay forwards end-to-end-encrypted data it can't read, and it doesn't store any of it. Ember goes back to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as soon as one is available. Cloud sync is free for now. Paid plans may come later, and local sync stays free.
How do I delete my account?
In either app, go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. You can also delete your account on the web, or email us from the address on your account.
This immediately deletes your email address, account record, sessions and sign-in codes. Your pairings and synced content only ever lived on your devices. To remove them, unpair your devices in Ember and uninstall the apps.
What do I need to run Ember?
An Android phone on Android 11 or later, and a Mac on macOS 13 or later.
